 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation: [se' 16, 1971-March 31, 1995), also known as Selena is an American Tejano singer. Her contributions to music and fashion have made her the "Queen" of Tejano music. She was among the most well-known performers from the Mexican-American genre of the late 20th century. In 2020, Billboard magazine put her in third place on their list of "Greatest Latino Artists of All Time", based on both Latin albums and Latin charts of songs. Many media outlets have called her the "Tejano Madonna" due to her attire choices. She also ranks among the most popular Latin musicians of all time . She is believed to have helped propel the Tejano genre into the mainstream market.The youngest of the Quintanilla family, she made her debut in the world of music as one of the members of the band Selena y Los Dinos, that also included her older siblings A.B. Quintanilla Quintanilla. In the 1980s, she often was dismissed and had to be denied bookings at venues across Texas for her performance of Tejano music--a male-dominated music genre. The acclaim she received grew after she was awarded the Tejano Music Award as Female Vocalist-of-the Year in 1987. She was awarded the award nine times. In 1989, she signed with EMI Latin and released her debut album titled Entre a Mi Mundo (1992). Her brother was her primary music producer and songwriter. Entre a Mi Mundo was a top-ranked album on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums charts for eight consecutive months. The album's success in the commercial market earned music critics the right to call it the "breakthrough" album of her musical career. One of the singles, "Como la Flor", became one of her most popular signature songs. Live! Live! In 1994, she released Amor Prohibido, which became one of the best-selling Latin albums sold in the United States. It was widely praised as having been the cause of Tejano music's debut as a marketable genre and it became one of the most loved Latin music subgenres of the time.
